Yard Waste

See Trash Pickup.

Other Yard Waste Options Include:

Grass Cycle

Compost at home

Bring yard waste to the Ann Arbor Drop-off Station

Grass Cycle: It is not necessary to collect your grass clippings and leaves while you mow. Studies show that mulching grass clipping and leaves back into your lawn can actually improve the overall health of your lawn and soils. Grass clippings are actually about 85% water and decompose within a day or so. Clippings do not cause thatch, and can decrease the amount of fertilizer your lawn requires by 30%.

Benefits of Grass-Cycle:

  • Save the time and hassle of bagging
  • Reduce fertilizer use by one-third
  • Save you — the homeowner — the cost of yard waste bags
  • Saves the Township the cost of collecting yard waste

Compost at Home: Home composting is easy. By following a few simple guidelines, your grass clipping and leaves can be transformed into a nutrient rich, natural fertilizer. A backyard compost pile is made by mixing dry leaves (brown, high carbon material) with grass clippings (green, high nitrogen material), soil and water.

Benefits of Home Composting:

  • Save the gas and energy required to transport yard waste to a central compost site
  • Create a nutrient rich fertilizer for your lawn and garden
  • Maintain natural, healthy soil systems

How to Get Started:

Call the Washtenaw County Solid Waste Program at 994-2398 for more information and ask for a free copy of The Composting Recipe, a fact sheet that explains how to set up and maintain your own compost pile. Visit their web site at http://www.ewashtenaw.org

Bring yard waste to the Ann Arbor Drop-off Station: The City of Ann Arbor operates a Drop-off Station at 2950 East Ellsworth Road near Platt Road. Township residents may take yard waste to the facility for a nominal fee. For more information, call 99-GREEN or (734) 994-7336 or visit the web site at http://www.ewashtenaw.org
